Twilight Hollow FAQ
About this site, it's content and how we like to do things around here.
| A Brief Twilight Hollow History...
Quinn, also known by the name Dogma, is self described "American Otaku". His fondness for anime, manga and video games as well as the casual forum roleplay as well as hundreds of other influences provoked him to start the roleplaying community, Guild Quest.
Through many strange and spurious twists and turns, Quinn ultimately decided to attribute his slowly blossoming community into being the home of what he plans to be his greatest creation, a 3D action RPG game called Twilight Hollow.
Sticking together through thick and thin, Twilight Hollow has been striving to provide that comfortable hobby-intensive atmosphere since late 2006 and is now what you see today.
| The Twilight Hollow Ambition...
Twilight Hollow was and will always be a haven for lost roleplayers, but more than that, it also strives to incorporate into it's community, anime and gaming community, much of which is Twilight Hollow's inspiration. We hope to maintain a friendly community where the casual forum-goer can find comfort, excitement and maybe even a few good laughs. So far we've been successful in that goal.
| Is Twilight Hollow right for you?
We're a community for roleplayers. Here our members construct virtual worlds of their own imagination and through these, we make our own excitement. Anime and manga are another strong influence on these forums, so most members will be fans of Japanese animation, comics or just the Japanese culture in general. Many of our members are also avid gamers and more than willing to chat about the next big title.
We do include several other sections for those that aren't as entertained by RPG or anime/manga. The Artist's Gallery is our section to allow members to display their personal artwork, writings and graphics to receive comments and feedback along with fun challenges. Our Serious Discussion sections aren't as frequently used, but lets members get that breath of "real life" when they want to speak of something a little more serious.
Ultimately, Twilight Hollow is a haven. It serves as a temporary break from the rest of the world where people can come, relax, and enjoy a pleasant (or sometimes goofy) conversation and we think everyone needs a break at some point. If you're looking for a place to spend some time, make new friends and have fun, what you're looking for may be right under your nose!
| What is frowned upon...
This place designed for older teens and young adults. If you are under 13, though we hate to discriminate, your are not welcome on this website as there is content and members you may simply be not mature enough for.
If you are looking for flame wars or a "good fight" you'll have to find another forum, as here you will be banned pretty quick. Registering multiple accounts or sharing accounts is also against policies and will get users in major trouble (If you've accidentally done so, please contact Dogma). Under no circumstances will we allow sexism, racism or bigotry on this website.

| Twilight Hollow runs on...
Twilight Hollow is hosted for free by IPBFree Boards, the creators of Invision Power Boards and we're quite pleased with the service and encourage them to continue their great work.
Roleplaying, here, is a simple concept! Create a character... and go play! But to help answer some questions and keep things from spiraling out of control, we've provided these guides for you.
| Roleplaying on the Boards
Taking a turn down fantasy lane, members of Twilight Hollow can easily begin a roleplay thread in which anyone can join in and enjoy an adventure. When you're roleplaying make sure that you're following the thread starter's personal guidelines and you're playing using an accepted style. Most RP threads are played casually so don't isolate yourself in a single thread! Expand your horizons, you may fit into a playing style you like and may make some friends in the process.
| Keeping Track of Games
The best way to keep track of YOUR rpg threads when they are amongst so many others, is to use the Track This Topic feature. You'll find it under the title when you view a thread. This saves the topic to your Control Panel, keeping a neat list of topics you're watching!
| Where Can I Roleplay?
The roleplaying section can be found under the heading, "Ironmonger's District". You are allowed to start or join RP threads anywhere there, however the Assasin's Guild requires a password.
Some threads are titled according to whether or not they are still accepting members or have reached their preferred capacity. As a general rule of thumb, stay away from threads titled [PRIVATE] or [CLOSED] unless you've been personally invited and keep and eye out for [OPEN] threads as they are generally still trying to get started and wish to have more players.
Alternatively, the same rule can be applies to roleplayer thread starters. Put [OPEN] into the title of a thread when you want some players and put [PRIVATE] in the title when you're playing a one on one game or [CLOSED] when you've reached maximum capacity for roleplayers.
| Styles of Roleplay
The styles of roleplay of course differ greatly based on each and every person, however how threads are set up determines how players respond to posts. The following are the two basic styles of roleplay:
- Crackstyle/Freestyle/Freeform - Crackstyle is the style of roleplay where roleplaying performed in short "cracks", instances in which a player makes a "crack". Cracks are made usually from a 3rd person perspective, where actions are encompassed by asterisks * and speech is encompassed in normal quotations. Players exchange making post "cracks" to push the adventure forward. Crackstyle games are generally open to goofing off. Example: *Draws sword and threatens Jack with it* "Don't make me beat you with this!"
- Literate/Organized - Literate roleplays generally require a higher level of literary intelligence to play, where the backstory is expanded upon as players exchange making posts in the form of a few paragraphs each typed from the perspective of each character in either first or third person. Literate roleplays almost always require a bio skeleton to be filled out before playing. Example: Dogma strode among the forest taking into account, the sudden lack of songbirds. He raised his fist, halting the group behind him, "We're not alone." he said as he unsheathed his sword and stepped into combat.
| Bio Skeletons
When it comes to literate roleplays, keeping track of your developing characters is key. That's when keeping a personal bio skeleton is useful, it's a place where you can easily keep your characters organized and augmented in a forum friendly format.
Roleplayers use these to quickly and easily fill out a short biography about the character they're roleplaying as. Thread starters will often request members to post or PM them a completed bio skeleton before they are allowed to roleplay in their thread.
| Speaking "Out Of Character" (or OOC)
As a universal rule on forum roleplays, when someone wishes to speak out of context of the character they are roleplaying in a roleplay session, it's customary to use double parentheses )) to encompass what you want to say. Example: ((This is my last post for the night, I'll be back on tomorrow!))
For larger, more formal roleplays, entirely separate threads may be set up called OOC threads or "Out Of Character" threads where members discuss the roleplay at length at length without a need for double parentheses. Such threads are generally used for recruiting more players and submitting bios to the topic starter.
About the staff and moderation system. The Dungeon Master is the Administrator and a Town Guard is a Moderator.
| The Tasks of a Moderator- Be a good role model.
- Be a nice, friendly and approachable person.
- Keep the community free of flamers, trolls, spammers, bots and other miscellaneous rulebreakers by issuing warnings and bans where necessary.
| Moderator Rules
Moderators are not above the rules. In fact they are held ever more strictly to upholding them because they are there to enforce them and be a good role model in doing so. Moderators do not exist to give people more power, but to keep stable the environment for the good of all members, staff or not.
| Handling Situations
As staff, there are general methods of properly handling any scenario without it becoming out of hand. The following are some of the best ways in doing so:
- Flaming - Blatant insults or trolling are in no way allowed on Twilight Hollow. This place does not exist so that you may insult people. Members who flame or troll should be immediately reported.
- Flooding - Flooding is the act of posting the same text or image repeatedly in a thread, board or the forum. This is not to be tolerated on any terms because they are only there to cause problems. They should be immediately banned and their offending posts deleted. If because of prior behavior you are hesitant to ban the member, PM Dogma or visit Moderator Discussion for a solution.
- Spamming - Similar to flooding, spamming is the posting of text or images for the purpose of advertisement or getting a reaction. This also should not be tolerated (unless it is placed within the Bathhouse Chat forum). The member should be warned twice and then escorted out if their behavior continues.
- Staff Bashing - As much as we hate to have to pull the reins once in a while, staff should never be prone to insults and their authority should not be undermined, this creates poor view of those who are trying hard to regulate the forums and deteriorates the overall atmosphere of the forum. Members should be warned once and then banned if behavior continues. If members have a serious issue with how a moderator is handling things, they should PM Dogma or post in the Questions & Assistance section.
- Botting - Botting is act of setting loose a webspider which mercilessly posts advertisements and useless links in our threads. A bot is best characterized by only ever appearing as a guest, having a generic name and have a post that mostly consists of a numerous number of irrelevant links to things like weight loss clinics and how to get World of Warcraft gold fast. These posts are to be deleted immediately on sight. Retrieving the poster's IP address and sending it to Dogma will also help preventing further bot infractions.
- Sexual Content - Twilight Hollow does allow raunchy or "naughty" content in discussions or roleplays where properly marked, however we do not allow sexually explicit conduct or behavior. Cybering or posting obscenely lewd material falls under this category. Because people react to these situations differently and because the acts themselves can vary, unless the post is utterly and uncontroversially offensive, the person should only receive a warning. Further punishment including banning should be considered within the Moderator's Discussion forum.
- Profanity - Twilight Hollow is fairly lenient in terms of cursing. Our policy is, you can use it for exclamation, but the moment you direct it at somebody else, it becomes a problem. It also becomes a problem when used frequently or with sexual connotations. Members who do this should be warned and they should be discussed in Moderator Discussion.
- Scamming - Tricking members into providing personal information like their password, IP address, email and other personal information should not be tolerated. Obvious scammers should be banned immediately.
- Impersonating - If a member is quite evidently pretending to be a moderator or administrator or someone else of authoritative significance, they should be warned once and then reported.
- Hacking - Worst case scenario, some attempts to hack the site. This situation can be recognized by the frequent unrestricted use of administrative controls, changing graphics suddenly and unexpectedly or the sudden and unscrupulous ban of members or staff. Alert me immediately via email and keep an eye open for names or IP addresses.

About the Reputation System.
| The Reputation System
The Reputation System is a system that promotes varying levels of social status among our members. The higher your reputation, the more you are looked up to as a role model of Twilight Hollow and the greater your privileges. The lower it is, the more likely you may find yourself denied some privileges. The following is the positive rank scale in earning reputation:
- 0 + Neutral
- 5 + Friendly
- 10 + Honored
- 25 + Revered
- 50 + Exalted
- 100 + Loved
A similar scale applies to your reputation rank when you lose reputation.
| How Do I Earn/Give Reputation?
Every time a member posts, a small and icon appears below their avatar. If you feel you should thank someone for their post, whether it was insightful, funny or useful, press the icon and you will be taken to a screen that asks for a comment. Type in a good reason for your comment ("he knows" and "because" or no comment are not adequate reasons) and click submit. A similar procedure may be taken if you feel their post was offensive, useless or off topic and you want to decrease their "rep", just click .
If your reason is not provided or decidedly inadequate, the change will be removed and your own reputation will be decreased by 1. You may change any one person's reputation only once every 24 hours (Moderators are exempt of this restriction).
| More Ways To Earn Reputation
There are numerous ways to acquire more reputation beyond the simple pleasant forum post.
- Members may often make a request for graphics or other certain resources, their rewards may often include reputation.
- Take Moderator surveys, it's win-win. Not only are Moderators looking for feedback to better improve the site for you, but they'll usually reward you with Reputation points for useful information.
- Shoot for Top Post Rep Awards! Whenever the total post count of the website reaches a certain benchmark, the top five posters (those that have the highest post count by that point) will earn a Top Post Rep Award, which is a single permanent increase to your reputation. This is by far the best way to earn reputation, because it both contributes to the content of the site and you don't need to impress anyone to earn it. To keep track of your post rank, get your post count high and watch as it ascends the "Hall of Fame" of top 10 posters of all time on the main page.
About the Award System.
| The Award System
Twilight Hollow likes to hold our best up high and to do so, we have an Award System that shows off the great achievements made by our members. Whenever a member earns an award, a small banner or medal appears beneath their avatar and in their profile proclaiming their achievement.
| The BEST OF Awards
The BEST OF Awards are a series of awards based on members who have achieved superior status in a certain area of the website over the course of a year. What you can earn a BEST OF Award for spans over a large variety of achievements and more achievements are added every year. The following is a list of current achievements members can strive for:
- Top Contributer - Donated the most or aided the website the most.

About the our podcasts.
| What Are Podcasts?
Podcasts are in essence downloadable radio shows. While podcasts do not utilize the radio, they share many similarities. Podcasts may include anything from music to discussions to videos. While most podcasts are audio only, it isn't uncommon that they heavily consist of talk shows, discussions or interviews, things you might normally find on the occasional radio station.
The unique thing about podcasts is that they can be subscribed to and downloaded. This means, unlike a normal radio show, they are released in parts as opposed to continuously streaming and because of this may be subscribed to (you would be alerted when a new show is available) and can be downloaded, going so far as to being able to play on your iPod or other MP3 player whenever you want. This of course means if you wish to stop the podcast and pick up listening to it later, it's perfectly possible.
| Twilight Hollow Radio
Twilight Hollow Radio is Twilight Hollow's official podcast. Dogma, our administrator hosts it and allows local members to guest in discussions involving the latest video games, movies, anime and few not so well known things in Japan. THRadio's known to be very casual and is played by ear, ultimately getting many laughs in the process.
| Where Can I Download THRadio?
You can find THRadio episodes free for download as well as instructions on how to subscribe through your favorite feed reader here. Extended podcasts, or podcasts with 16+ content are reserved in the Mature Discussion section and can be found here.
